The motorway is one of the most intimidating stretches of road for newly qualified drivers — and for plenty of experienced licence holders who simply haven’t had much practice on them. Sheffield sits right alongside the M1, one of the busiest motorways in the UK. If you plan to drive in South Yorkshire with any regularity, motorway confidence isn’t just useful. It’s essential.
At Intensive Driving Courses Sheffield, motorway driving is something we incorporate into our tuition regularly — whether as part of a full intensive course or as a standalone session for drivers who want to tackle it head-on.
When Can You Drive on the Motorway?
Since June 2018, learner drivers in the UK are permitted to take motorway lessons — provided they’re accompanied by an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) in a car fitted with dual controls. This was a genuinely positive change. Previously, the first motorway experience for most new drivers was solo and unguided, immediately after passing their test. There’s no reason for that to be the case any longer.
If you’ve already passed your test and want to tackle the motorway for the first time, or rebuild your confidence after avoiding it, we can arrange dedicated sessions for that too.
Why Does the Motorway Feel So Different?
Motorway driving demands a different mindset and a distinct set of skills compared to urban or rural roads:
- Speed management — sustaining safe speeds at 60-70mph for extended periods requires calm, consistent control
- Lane discipline — knowing which lane to be in, when to move, and how to overtake safely and legally
- Joining and exiting — accelerating on a slip road and merging smoothly with fast-moving traffic is its own skill
- Extended observation — at high speeds, you need to scan and anticipate much further ahead than on slower roads
- Concentration and fatigue — motorway driving is more mentally demanding than it appears, particularly over longer distances
Getting comfortable on the M1 around Sheffield, the M18, or the A1(M) takes practice. Having a qualified instructor beside you when you first build that practice makes an enormous difference.
Key Motorway Rules Every Sheffield Driver Should Know
Whether you’re preparing for a lesson or brushing up before driving independently, here are some fundamentals worth revisiting:
- Keep left unless overtaking — driving in the middle lane unnecessarily is a traffic offence
- Use the two-second rule as a minimum at motorway speeds — at 70mph, stopping distances are far greater than most drivers expect
- Check your mirrors and signal well in advance before any lane change
- Watch for Smart Motorway signs — sections of the M1 near Sheffield are smart motorways, where the hard shoulder can be a live lane
- Plan your exit in advance — know your junction number before you join so you’re never making last-second decisions
How We Cover Motorway Driving in Our Courses
When you book a motorway-focused session with us, your instructor will guide you through the entire process: joining from a slip road, managing your position and speed in live traffic, safe overtaking technique, and exiting at junctions. We use real Sheffield-area roads so the experience is directly relevant to the journeys you’ll actually be making.
Motorway tuition works well as part of a larger intensive course block, as a session within a refresher package, or as a standalone add-on. Just let us know what you’re working towards and we’ll build the right session around it.
Is Motorway Tuition Only for New Drivers?
Not at all. Many of our motorway sessions are for people who passed their test years ago but have consistently avoided motorways. There’s no embarrassment in that — and there’s no reason to keep avoiding them either. Our instructors are non-judgmental and experienced in working with drivers at all levels of confidence.
