10-hour vs 40-hour intensive course: which is right for you?

When it comes to intensive driving courses, one of the most important decisions is getting the course length right. Book too short and you may not reach test standard. Book too long and you’re paying for hours you don’t need.

At Intensive Driving Courses Sheffield, we offer four course lengths — 10, 20, 30, and 40 hours — each designed for a specific level of experience. Here’s how to figure out which one is the right starting point for you.

Understanding the four course lengths

10-hour intensive course

Who it’s for: Learners with significant driving experience who feel close — or nearly at — test standard. This course is also ideal for those who’ve taken a test recently and been unsuccessful, or those needing to sharpen specific areas such as reversing manoeuvres or roundabout approach.

What to expect: Focused, targeted tuition designed to iron out remaining weaknesses and prepare you for the test environment. Less time on basics, more time fine-tuning.

20-hour intensive course

Who it’s for: Learners who have good car control and approximately 20 hours of prior driving experience. Also a strong choice for those who were close to test standard in the past but haven’t driven for some time and need to rebuild confidence and consistency.

What to expect: A balance of skills consolidation and test preparation. All required manoeuvres covered, with meaningful time on test routes in Sheffield.

30-hour intensive course

Who it’s for: Part-trained learners who have some driving experience but aren’t yet confident across all required areas. Can be spread over two or more weeks to allow more time for consolidation.

What to expect: A full curriculum covering all manoeuvres, road types, and test-standard driving — with the pace adjusted to your starting point.

40-hour intensive course

Who it’s for: Complete beginners, or those with very little previous experience behind the wheel. This is our most comprehensive option, designed to take you from zero to test-ready.

What to expect: Day one starts with the absolute basics and builds progressively throughout the course. It’s demanding, but it’s the fastest route from no experience to a full driving licence.

How do I know which course is right for me?

Ask yourself these questions honestly before booking.

Have I driven before?

If you’ve had any previous lessons — formal or informal — you’re likely not a 40-hour learner. Think about how many hours of actual driving experience you have, and how recent that experience is.

How long ago did I last drive?

Skills fade. If you haven’t been behind the wheel in a year or more, you may need more hours than you’d expect, even if you were close to test standard before. Be realistic about where you’re starting from today, not where you were then.

Have I taken a test before?

If you’ve previously failed a test, a focused 10 or 20-hour course targeting the specific areas noted by your examiner is often a highly efficient route to a pass second time around.

Can I add more hours if I need them?

Yes. If it becomes clear during your course that you’d benefit from additional hours, we can discuss extending your booking. Our instructors will always be straightforward with you about where you are and what we believe you need — we’d rather you pass first time than rush you to a test before you’re genuinely ready.
